We believe intellectual curiosity will enable your son to go places. Our highly experienced staff (who include six specialist resource teachers, a librarian and four teacher support staff) offer a range of ongoing and in-depth learning programmes to inspire your son’s intellectual curiosity.
Your son will have his own classroom teacher for most subjects, with resource teachers supporting classes in English, Maths, Thinking Skills, Information and Communications Technology, Library, Visual and Performing Arts, Health and Physical Education, and Sport and Outdoor Education.
At Wellesley, we believe the curriculum needs to engage the learner in a way that moves away from procedural and rote learning into higher levels of thinking. Our teaching and learning programmes are guided by the New Zealand Curriculum, which was gazetted in 2007. This national document places the learner at the centre of the learning process and provides a structure to build dynamic learning programmes.
Learning at Wellesley is developmental and individual, which means we take into account different rates of learning. Teachers work with boys at all levels of ability, tailoring their education to their needs and interests. In addition we also have active Learning Support and GATE (Gifted and Talented) programmes.
Thinking and creativity are skills that can be taught and learnt. The changes our children will inevitably encounter in their lives will give these skills the same currency as the traditional core skills of numeracy and literacy.
Our interactive-inquiry model of learning ensures that the boys we teach gain the skills they need for lifelong learning. Positive feedback from the colleges they attend after they move on from Wellesley demonstrates that the boys are well set up for success in the secondary environment.
